🎩 Le Père Goriot

🇫🇷 Les mésaventures d’un père trop aimant, près à tout pour le bonheur de ses filles. L’ouvrage qui m’a introduite à l’œuvre de Balzac. Je lui ai consacré un article complet ici (en anglais). J’ai été emportée par l’écriture de Balzac, précise, photographique même. Les personnages de Rastignac et Vautrin ont fait une forte impression sur moi. L’histoire du Père Goriot, pauvre bougre épris de ses filles et aussi touchant qu’agaçant, permet de nouer les fils de nombreuses autres intrigues à l’épicentre desquelles se trouve la maison Vauquier où la plupart des protagonistes résident.

🇬🇧 The story of an unfortunate father whose love for his daughter only brought misery to. I talked about it at length here. It was my introduction to Balzac’s work. I loved the beautiful, precise, photographic writing. Rastignac and Vautrin made a lasting impression on me. Father Goriot is at once a very touching and annoying character, and his story together with the boarding house he lives in, serve as the epicentre of many intrigues.

🎩 La Peau de Chagrin

🇫🇷 Dans une boutique de “curiosités” Raphael déniche un talisman capable d’accomplir tous ses désirs. Mais à quel prix? Très particulière comme œuvre. Beaucoup d’éléments fantastiques, la frontière entre le réel et l’imaginaire y est souvent floue. C’est au final un livre très fort sur le désir, son caractère vain et sa capacité à nous détruire, nous dévorer même.

🇬🇧In a curiosity shop, Raphaël finds an odd talisman that can grant him all his wishes. But this may come at a huge price…A very unique novel. It often blurs the line between reality and imagination. It’s an interesting reflection on the vain nature of desire, and its ability to consume us.

🎩 La Maison du Chat-Qui-Pelote

🇫🇷 Quand la vie sereine d’une famille d’honnêtes commerçants se retrouvent chamboulée par une idylle inattendue. Une charmante et cruelle étude de mœurs. Rapide à lire, le style est limpide et les personnages bien campés. Toujours un plaisir de m’immerger dans futile bonne société parisienne de l’époque sous la plume de Balzac. La fin est assez abrupte ceci dit.

🇬🇧 An industrious shopkeeper family sees is life troubled by an impromptu love story…. A charming, yet cruel study of moral and manners. An easy read, the writing is luculent and the characters well developed. I always enjoy diving into the futile upper Parisian society of his time in Balzac’s company. The end is a bit abrupt though.

🎩 Le Bal de Sceaux

🇫🇷 Une jeune fille trop gâtée va recevoir une bien cruelle leçon de vie. Une autre étude de mœurs, que j’ai beaucoup appréciée. Des personnages qui me parlent et une plume toujours aussi fluide. Comme souvent avec Balzac, l’arrière-plan politique et social de l’époque est bien développé. Toujours cruel évidemment et plein d’enseignements intéressants. La morale y est cependant un peu trop évidente.

🇬🇧 A spoiled young lady is taught a life lesson, and not kindly. Another study of moral and manners that pleased me a lot. The characters speak to me and the writing is fluid. As expected with Balzac a lot of socio-political background is provided. The story ends up being cruel, as usual, and full of insights. The moral of the story is a bit too obviously stated though.
