Divine Rivals & Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross

It’s a been a while since my last post, so I thought I would come back with this quick review; a short and sweet way to ease back into my writing routine — as if I ever had one!

This duology was recommended to me by a fellow bookstagrammer and I was happy to find my local library (and its partner libraries) carried digital copies.

I really enjoyed it. I found the universe rich and intriguing, the magic fascinating (would have loved more details on that, the romance caught me, I was all in. The war, and its physical as well as moral devastations were well portrayed. I found myself caring, eager to discover how things turned out, anxious to learn that everything turned out alright, sobbing when it didn’t. These were really good reads; a very original twist of this unshakable truth of the power of words. Why really good and not stellar then?

For two main reasons.

  • the writing was beautiful but overwrought at times (I need to pull some quotes but will have to borrow them again)
  • I was left confused about the gods’ motivations. The myths were nice fragments of context but I still couldn’t totally figure out the “Why” and “What for”.

Overall I am glad I read these and would be interested in reading more by the author.
